August 2008

16 Aug – A mobile home sustained moderate damage following a midday fire. A neighbor noticed smoke coming from the home and called 911. Firefighters had the fire under control within minutes of their arrival and saved over 90% of the homes contents. 

16 Aug – Residents evacuated after noticing smoke coming from their clothes dryer. Firefighter verified there was no damage to the home and the cause was excessive lint build up in the vent hose. 

19 Aug – A mechanical failure is likely cause of a fire that destroyed the family pick up truck. The owner had been driving the vehicle about 30 minutes prior to the fire and had been experiencing some problems with the motor. The truck was a total loss. 

22 Aug – An unoccupied home narrowly escaped damage following a fire that raced through the dried shrubbery near the house. Neighbors reacted quickly and held the flames in check until the fire department arrived and completed extinguishment. The fire was probably caused by a discarded cigarette. 

25 Aug – A woman was taken to Gulf Breeze hospital following a t-bone collision at Fox Den Dr. and Navarre Parkway. The occupants of the second vehicle were not injured. 

30 Aug – Wildfire scorches 14 acres. Fanned by gusty winds and fueled with dry brush, a wildfire ripped across approximately 14 acres before being controlled. Firefighters from six departments were called to battle the afternoon blaze.  

30 Aug – Engine 45 responded to Interstate 10 to assist Central departments extinguish an RV fire. The camper, belonging to a Louisiana resident who was evacuating from Hurricane Gustov,  was a total loss, not much beyond the vehicles frame was identifiable. 

31 Aug – One pedestrian was killed and another was in critical condition following a hit and run accident on Pawnee Dr. An unknown driver struck the couple as they were walking their dogs near the YMCA. Despite efforts from bystanders, firefighters and paramedics the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was taken to Baptist hospital with critical head injuries. The dog was also injured and was taken by an Animal Control officer. 

31 August – HNFD ends the month with 205 in district and five out of district responses for a total of 210 calls.
